Ukrainian farmers launch sunflower sowing campaign

Ukrainian agrarians in six Ukrainian regions have launched a sunflower sowing campaign, having planted the crop on an area of 63,000 hectares (ha), or 1% of the target.

As of April 1, sowing of early grain and leguminous crops is under way in Ukraine. Farmers have already sown them on 1.4 million ha, or 61% of the target, the Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry's press service said on April 2.

In particular, wheat was sown on an area of 102,000 ha, or 59% of the target; spring barley on 984,000 ha (63%), oats on 89,000 ha (46%); peas on 217,000 ha (62%); and sugar beet on 37,000 ha (14%).

Mineral fertilizers were added on 7.2 million ha for winter grain crops, or 95% of the target, the report said.

In particular, as of April 1, mineral fertilizers were added on 6.1 million ha for winter wheat (95% of the target), 110,000 ha for winter rye (96%), 984,000 ha for winter barley (98%), and 1.3 million ha for winter rapeseed (98%).

As UNIAN reported early, Ukraine started planting early spring grain and leguminous crops on March 4, according to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry.

In 2018, Ukraine harvested a record high yield of grain, having threshed 70.1 million tonnes.
