Ukraine has lost a key trade dispute with the Russian Federation at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in a transit transportation case.

Kyiv challenged the political ban imposed by Russia, which broke the shortest path of Ukrainian goods to the markets of Central Asia. The WTO will officially publish its decision on the complaint of Ukraine vs Russia in the near future, according to the Ukrainian media outlet European Pravda.

Having considered the arguments of the parties, the WTO accepted position of Russia that the political situation in Ukraine in 2014-2015 created significant threats to its national security. Therefore, they did not recognize the restriction of transit as a violation.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in mid-February 2017, Ukraine, a WTO member, filed a lawsuit against Russia for numerous transit restrictions on Ukrainian goods imposed by Moscow in 2016.

On January 1, 2016, Russia completely banned the transit of Ukrainian export goods through its territory.
