"The [Deep and Comprehensive] Free Trade Agreement [DCFTA] with the European Union opened up new opportunities for exports of Ukrainian industrial products, but there was much work related to technical and technological requirements. Since 2016, we have substantially transformed the system of technical regulation and standardization. In particular, we eliminated 90% of Soviet-era state standards (GOSTs). Instead, we have developed and adopted 5,105 national standards [DSTU], and now 91% of them are harmonized with the EU standards. In 2019, we plan to adopt another 3,000 standards," the ministry's press service on April 10 quoted Kubiv as saying at a meeting with CEOs of state-run enterprises engaged in standardization, metrology and certification.

The official also noted that since 2018, Ukraine had acquired a full membership under the Metre Convention, which opens additional opportunities for exports.

"Since Ukraine acquired full membership in the Metre Convention, we have received the recognition of the Ukrainian system of measurement and its compliance with international requirements by all 59 Member States to the Convention. This is a compulsory prerequisite for Ukraine to become a full-fledged member of the International Organization of Legal Metrology [IOLM] and to continue work on concluding the Agreement on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products (ACAA) with the European Union," Kubiv added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Most of the Soviet specification standards, the so-called GOSTs (developed before 1992), became invalid in Ukraine on January 1, 2019. In total, 12,090 such standards have been terminated.
