Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has equated the purchase of Russian gas to the purchase of weapons from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with Fox News during his visit to Washington, Morawiecki said Poland has not come to terms with Germany on Nord Stream 2, Ukrainian media outlet European Pravda reported with reference to RMF24.

"Germany wants to buy Russian gas through Nord Stream 2, and paying for Russian gas is like paying for President Putin's weapons," the Polish prime minister said.

At the same time, he stressed the importance of the purchase by Poland of U.S. liquefied natural gas and long-term contracts that have already been concluded in this area.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the U.S. House of Representatives supported the bill to oppose Russia's Nord Stream 2 project, a gas pipeline to Europe bypassing Ukraine.

On April 15, the Council of the European Union approved amendments to the EU Gas Directive, which will allow the European standards to be extended to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, considerably complicating the project.
