The losses to the Ukrainian state due to the bankruptcy of 44 banks amounts to $200 billion, accounting for nearly 9% of GDP, the governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Valeria Gontareva, said on Friday during the Government Questions Hour in Ukraine’s parliament.
She said $50 billion of this amount has to be reimbursed by the state through the Individual’s Deposit Guarantee Fund.
The head of the NBU expressed her appreciation for adoption of the law on strengthening the liabilities of bank owners and management.
"Why is this important? Because the owners and management of insolvent banks must pay damages caused to the state and investors. In 2014-2015 the Guarantee Fund had to administer 44 insolvent banks, 11 of which went under in 2015," Gontareva said.
