Financial Times: EU vetoes nuclear deal between Russia and Hungary

The European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) has refused to agree to Hungary’s importing nuclear fuel from the Russian Federation. The Hungarian authorities appealed against the decision, but the 28 commissioners of the EU member states supported the position of Euratom at a meeting last week.

However, the details of the negotiations were kept secret.

At the moment, Hungary must either sign a new contract for the supply of fuel or appeal against the decision of the European Commission.

As reported earlier, Russia and Hungary signed a contract worth EUR 12 billion for the construction of two power units of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in December 2014.

For the implementation of this project, Moscow had to provide Budapest with a loan of up to EUR 10 billion. The funds were planned to be spent for equipment supplies, and work and services for the design, construction and commissioning of the reactors.
