Ukraine may cancel state regulation of food prices

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine plans to cancel the mandatory certification of food products and the fee for waste oil disposal, which is expected to help business save UAH 2.7 billion, Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Aivaras Abromavicius said at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Abromavicius was presenting a plan approved by the government committee regarding deregulation in Ukraine until 2017, which contains 170 initiatives.

The plan would abolish state regulation of prices for food products, according to Abromavicius, who said food prices should be solely determined by the market.

"It is necessary to clarify some of the key initiatives, such as the abolition of mandatory fee for disposal of waste oils,” Abromavicius said.

“Savings for businesses are predicted at about UAH 700 million. The abolition of compulsory certification of food products is expected to help save about UAH 1-2 billion for businesses."
