Energoatom and Polenergia to work jointly on project for electricity exports to EU

State-owned company Energoatom, the operator of all operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine, and Polish company Polenergia International have signed an agreement on a project for electricity exports to Europe, which will make it possible to use all available nuclear capacity and more funds to complete the third and fourth reactors of Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant, Energoatom has said in a statement.

According to the statement, the relevant agreements were drawn up during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the "Energy Bridge Ukraine - European Union" project on March 17 in the Kyiv office of Energoatom.

The signatories of the document are the chairman of Energoatom Yuriy Nedashkovsky, vice president of the Polish company Polenergia International Grzegorz Stanisławski, and a representative of the Ukrenergo company.

Among the challenges faced by the participants of the project is the commissioning of the 750 kV Khmelnitsky NPP - Rzeszow (Poland) overhead transmission line. This will allow the use of existing nuclear capacities without restrictions, providing surplus electricity for export to the EU, and raising funds to invest in the completion of reactors No.3 and No.4 at Khmelnitsky NPP.

It is also planned to make preparations of nuclear facilities for full unification of the Ukrainian and European energy system.

"To date, there have been upgrades performed at power-generating units of the Ukrainian NPPs, after which they will meet all of the technical requirements to be connected to the ENTSO-E network," Energoatom said in its report.

In the report, Nedashkovsky noted that the construction of the 750 kV overhead line from Khmelnitsky NPP to Rzeszow will help attract additional funds.

In turn, Stanisławski, the vice-president of the Polish company Polenergia International, expressed his satisfaction with the intensification of existing contacts between Energoatom and Polenergia and the start of the practical implementation of a large-scale project.

"We are really proud of the opportunity to work with such a solid company as Energoatom,” said Stanisławski.

“I think that our project has great prospects. But it is not only a matter of the economic component, which will certainly be beneficial to all the parties - for me personally it is very important to be able to assist Ukraine in the difficult times that it is going through. Cooperation in the energy sector will be another proof of the friendly relations between Ukraine and Poland."
