Ukraine inflation accelerates: vegetable prices rise most

Inflation in Ukraine in May 2019 amounted to 9.6% on year, accelerating from 8.8% in annual terms a month earlier, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine reports.

May prices compared against the previous month were up 0.7% after rising in April 1% against March.

Compared with December 2018, consumer prices in May increased 4.2%.

The agency says the inflation rate in annual terms accelerated for the second month in a row, after rising in April to 8.8%, when the largest price increase was recorded for vegetables (47%).

It is noted that in May, the highest price increase on year was also recorded for vegetables (53%), railway passenger transport (28.2%), road passenger transport (24.4%), sewerage services (23%), and bread (20.2%).

The State Statistics Service recalled that the data are given excluding the occupied Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as the occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

As UNIAN reported earlier, inflation in Ukraine in March 2019 in annual terms was 8.6%, slowing down from 8.8% a month earlier.

The state budget of Ukraine for 2019 is based on a macroeconomic forecast with real GDP growth of 3% with inflation of 7.4%.

The National Bank of Ukraine predicts a slowdown in inflation to 6.3% in 2019, while the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank say it will be 7.3%.

According to the consensus forecast of experts polled by UNIAN, this year Ukraine is expected to see a slowdown in consumer price growth to 7.2%.
