Zelensky's Office: Moratorium on round timber exports "inefficient"

EU partners "very sharply" raise the question of lifting the corresponding moratorium, since they believe that Ukraine has violated its obligations.

Oleksiy Honcharuk, Deputy Head of the President's Office on economic issues, is convinced that the moratorium on the round timber exports is ineffective and should be revised.

"Regarding the moratorium on the export of timber... See, the ideology of introducing a moratorium on these exports was that it was necessary to stop illegal logging. It is obvious that the cessation of illegal logging never happened and this means that this measure did not exactly achieve its goal," he told a Kyiv briefing Tuesday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

According to Honcharuk, EU partners "very sharply" raise the question of lifting the corresponding moratorium. "They believe that Ukraine for its part has violated obligations," he added.

"In any case, the existing model, including this moratorium, does not solve the problems that exist, therefore we will reconsider this decision comprehensively," Honcharuk said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in April 2015, the Verkhovna Rada adopted amendments to Law "On peculiarities of state regulation of activities of business entities related to the sale and export of timber" (regarding the moratorium on the export of raw timber and lumber). The legislation introduced a 10-year moratorium on the export of these products outside the customs territory of Ukraine.

After the introduction of the moratorium, EU officials stated that the ban on exports was contrary to the norms of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement.
