CEO of Ukrainian national railways company PJSC Ukrzaliznytsia Yevhen Kravtsov has announced Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania have launched a new container train.

"Containerships Train, linking Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine is our 22nd container train. We have now a competitive speed of delivery regardless of weather conditions, regular train runs and a clear schedule. In addition, a 25% decrease in logistics costs on the average. So, the benefits are evident," he wrote on Facebook on July 9.

Kravtsov added that the new train would run twice a week from Lithuania's Draugyste railway station to the Ukrainian city of Brovary.

"Today, 65 containers have been sent with the first train, which is a good indicator. A 50-hour run. Previously, freight in that direction was delivered by road, but we switched to transportation by rail. The European Union focuses on reducing the share of road transport in favor of more environmentally friendly railway and waterborne transportation," he said.

Draugyste is located near the port of Klaipeda. Therefore, another route is planned to be launched for the Ukrainian port of Odesa this autumn.

"Given the reorientation of domestic exports to EU countries and an increase in seaport freight, it is container shipments that will offer advantages," Kravtsov summed up.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on May 28, CEOs of railroads in Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania, as well as those of Containerships LLC (Ukraine), and Intermodal Container Service and LG CARGO (Lithuania) signed an agreement to implement a new project, that is container transportation by Containerships Train.
