The conclusion of agreements on mutual emergency assistance with bordering countries is provided for by the general ENTSO-E rules to create additional backup mechanisms.
The state-owned operator of Ukraine's integrated power grids, Ukrenergo, and the Polish transmission system operator, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), have concluded an agreement on the supply of electricity as part of mutual emergency assistance.
"This is the first such document signed by Ukrenergo with a transmission system operator that is an ENTSO-E [the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity] member," Ukrenergo's press service said in a statement on Monday, August 5.

The agreement was signed by Ukrenergo CEO Vsevolod Kovalchuk, Deputy CEO for Operational Management and Chief Dispatcher of Ukrenergo Vitalii Zaichenko, PSE President and CEO Eryk Kłossowski, and Vice President and COO Tomasz Sikorski.
It is noted that emergency assistance from neighboring countries is provided in cases where the measures taken and reserves are not enough to avoid a threat or the need to limit the power supplies to consumers. The assistance is required to maintain the integrity of the power grids and is provided through interstate power lines.
"The conclusion of agreements on mutual emergency assistance with bordering countries is provided for by the general ENTSO-E rules to create additional backup mechanisms to help ensure the reliability of power grids," the press service added.
The Ukrenergo-PSE agreement regulates the electricity exchange between the operators to prevent or eliminate emergencies in power grids, determines its mechanisms and procedure, as well as conditions for providing assistance, etc.
The document stipulates the supply of electricity in emergency situations through the interstate 220 kV Dobrotvir-Zamość power grid.
"Ukrenergo is preparing for integration into ENTSO-E. Therefore, it is important for us to implement European standards and approaches in working with neighboring transmission system operators. In this context, the agreement on mutual emergency assistance with the Polish operator is a tool for developing relations between Ukrenergo and PSE," the press service quoted Kovalchuk as saying.
As UNIAN reported earlier, the expansion of the synchronous zone of the ENTSO-E continental European energy system through the connection of Ukraine's energy system is a component of ensuring the integration of the Ukrainian electricity market into the internal energy market of the European Union, which already includes 41 system operators and 34 participating countries.
