The SBU Security Service of Ukraine has been asked to verify information on the purchase of coal by the state-owned power generating company Centrenergo from the occupied areas of Donbas.

"The facts released by the media are outrageous and require an urgent investigation into a new corruption scheme of shipping coal to Ukraine for state-owned Centrenergo from the occupied areas as that originating from Russia. We urge you to verify the information on the conclusion of an agreement between PJSC Centrenergo and the Nafta Fors company for the supply of T 0-50 coal (lean coal), which according to documents is supposedly shipped from Kemerovo region of the Russian Federation, but actually arrives from the town of Shakhtarsk occupied by Russian invaders," according to an appeal of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine to SBU Acting Chief Ivan Bakanov.

According to the authors of the appeal, it is alarming that Centrenergo represented by First Deputy Director Yaroslav Gromko signed a contract for a rather large amount, namely UAH 400 million (US$15.60 million), with an unknown Boryspil-based company founded only in August last year with charter capital of UAH 1,000 (US$39).

"PJSC Centrenergo whose majority owner is the state should first of all maintain the production chain of the state coal industry, namely, to pay the state-owned enterprise Derzhvuhlepostach on time for the transportation of coal from enrichment plants to its thermal power plants. This is not happening. The supplier accumulates debts to the factories, and those, in turn, do not pay mines for coal mining. As a result, both the mines and the enrichment plants have no funds left to continue production. The possible outcome is that enterprises stop and miners are left without wages," the appeal says.

If the facts are confirmed, the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine asks the SBU to take urgent measures to stop the corruption scheme and punish its organizers.
