Price of cereals basket grows by 12% in H1

The price of a cereals basket in January-June 2019 grew by 12% compared to the same period last year.

"According to our own study of food prices, a cereals basket added 12% in price from January 1 to July 1, 2019," Chairman of the Ukrainian Association of Retail Chain Suppliers Oleksiy Doroshenko said on Facebook.

The cereals basket includes millet, which went up in price by 35% during the reporting period, as well as barley groats (by 8%), semolina (by 6%), buckwheat (by 3%).

At the same time, the price of rice decreased by 2% in the six months.

The expert added that according to the results of the first half of this year, the vegetable basket in Ukraine went up by 52% in price, and the price of the bread basket grew by 9%.

In addition, the dairy basket rose by 2.6% in price, and the price of the meat basket increased by 1.6%.

"But as vegetables, cereals and bread are balanced by a much more expensive dairy and meat products, consumer inflation in Ukraine in monetary terms, which, according to the NBU, has been growing in recent years mainly because of 'raw food products,' has been only 3.6% since the beginning of the year," expert explained.

In August-September, experts expect a further rise in the price of buckwheat at a rate faster than inflation, a moderate increase in prices of other cereals and a significant decrease in prices of millet, Doroshenko said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, inflation in Ukraine in July 2019 in annual terms – compared to July 2018 – was 9.1%, accelerating from 9% (year-over-year) a month earlier.

Consumer prices in July fell by 0.6% compared to June after decreasing by 0.5% in June compared to May.

Since the beginning of the year, consumer prices have grown by 3%.
