The state-owned operator of Ukraine's gas transmission system (GTS), Ukrtransgaz, and Chișinău-based Moldovagaz have agreed on technical solutions to create the required capacities to receive natural gas from Romania via a system of trans-Balkan pipelines by reverse.

"Experts have agreed on upgrading the 'Hrebenyky' (Ukraine) and 'Căuşeni' (Moldova) border gas measuring stations to work in reverse mode. The Ukrainian side plans to build additional bypass lines of gas pipelines, install new technological pipe reducers with the installation of three ball valves, and complete the reconstruction of the Hrebenyky gas measuring station before the end of 2019," Ukrtransgaz's press service reported on August 19.

It is expected that a permanent capacity for imports of 1.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year from Romania will be created before January 1, 2020. This will ensure the main goal of the project, namely the diversification of Ukraine's gas supply routes. "Transportation of natural gas from the 'Isaccea-1 – Orlivka' point will be provided through the 'Rozdilna – Izmail' and 'Shebelynka – Dnipropetrovsk – Kryvyi Rih – Izmail' gas pipelines," the report said.

Experts note this project is of strategic importance for Ukraine and Moldova since the diversification of gas supply routes will increase the reliability and uninterrupted gas supplies to consumers in both countries.
