SBU busts cryptocurrency miners at Ukrainian power plant

SBU detectives during a warranted search have discovered unauthorized computer equipment installed at the Yuzhoukrainska Nuclear Power Plant, which was used for cryptocurrency mining.

The equipment was connected to the World Wide Web, which posed a significant threat to cybersecurity at the nuclear site.

The local court said classified information regarding the system of the NPP's physical protection had been leaked as a result of the said online connection.

Law enforcers, who say it was the NPP officials who were engaged in illegal mining, on July 10 seized a media converter, an optical fiber cable, and part of a network cable.

As reported earlier, in June, bitcoin cost over $10,000, while in July it experienced a sharp drop, trading below $10,000.

The electricity used for Bitcoin produces about 22 megatons of CO2 annually, a study in the scientific journal Joule estimated, according to the BBC.
