Ukraine cuts sugar exports by almost quarter

Ukraine has reduced sugar exports by 24% for 11 months of the 2018-2019 marketing year (MY, September 2018 – August 2019) compared to the same period last year.

"In the current marketing period, the most active demand for Ukrainian sugar is observed in the post-Soviet countries: Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan," the press service of Ukraine's National Association of Sugar Producers "Ukrsugar" said in a statement on August 21.

Ukrainian producers exported 7,000 tonnes of sugar in July alone, the report said.

Ukraine almost did not import sugar over the period under review, the press service added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in January, Ukraine used its quota for duty-free exports of sugar to the European Union in 2019.

The country cut sugar exports by 27%, to 564,000 tonnes, in MY 2017-2018.

Ukrainian enterprises reduced sugar production by 15% during the sugar refining season of MY 2018-2019, to 1.7 million tonnes.
