"Since the beginning of the week, the price of greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine has grown on average by 29%. Today, [greenhouse] farms are offering these products at a price of UAH 12-15 (US$0.48-$0.60) per kilogram," the East Fruit analytical platform said on August 23.

According to experts, the price hike is associated with a seasonal shortage of supply, while some farms have already begun harvesting the second crop rotation cucumbers. In addition, customer activity significantly increased ahead of the holiday weekend (August 24-26), which also contributed to higher prices of products.

"At the same time, market participants note that, despite such a rapid rise in prices, the demand for greenhouse cucumbers in the Ukrainian market remains very high. Noteworthy, the limited supply of field grown products, among other things, contributed to the rise in price of greenhouse cucumbers," the report said.

According to East Fruit, field cucumbers of low quality account for the major share of field grown product, which increases the interest of buyers in quality products from greenhouses.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the prices of vegetables from Ukraine's borsch kit almost doubled in 2018, to UAH 56.6 ($2.25). In total, Ukraine harvested 9.4 million tonnes of vegetables in 2018.
