Ukraine's Cabinet liquidates Directorate for Combating Economic Crimes

This is the first symbolic step to demonstrate there will be no pressure on businesses.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk has announced the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine liquidated the Directorate for Combating Economic Crimes, the department of the National Police, which was engaged in the fight against economic crime.

"We've liquidated the economic division of the National Police. The Directorate for Combating Economic Crimes [UBEP] has gone down in history. Policemen should no longer intervene in businesses," he said at a Cabinet meeting on September 2.

Honcharuk also added it is also necessary to amend the legislative framework to resolve the issue of jurisdiction and create a law enforcement agency that will deal with economic issues.

"This should be an analytical [which will replace the UBEP] rather than a law enforcement agency. We expect the relevant draft law will be considered and passed by the Verkhovna Rada in the next two to three months. And we, as the government, will execute this law. Therefore, we has eliminated the UBEP, but the work in underway. This is the first symbolic step to demonstrate there will be no pressure on businesses," he said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky instructed the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, to pass a draft law on the Financial Investigation Service (FIS) before December 1, 2019.
