According to preliminary data for 2014, the pre-tax losses of large and medium-sized enterprises in Ukraine, excluding banks and budget institutions, amounted to UAH 408.169 billion, compared to a UAH 38.289 billion profit recorded in the previous year.
The worsened economic figures were reported on the Web site of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.
The data are presented excluding the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, and the parts of Ukraine where Russian-backed militants have seized control from the local authorities.
In 2014, the financial result of profitable enterprises increased by 1.6% compared to 2013 - to UAH 170.257 billion. Profit growth was seen in such areas as the arts, sports, entertainment and recreation (2.7 times); agriculture, forestry and fisheries (almost two times); transport, and warehousing, postal and courier activities (30.4%).
The figures of loss-making enterprises in the past year worsened by 4.5 times - to UAH 578.426 billion. The greatest losses were incurred in the areas of real estate transactions (eight times); information and telecommunications (almost seven times); professional scientific and technical activities (6.3 times); health care and social assistance (5.3 times); wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles (4.6 times); and temporary accommodation and catering services (4.6 times).
It has also been reported that in 2014 the number of loss-making enterprises in relation to their total number increased by 5.5 percentage points accounting for 40.1%.
The banking system of Ukraine in 2014 incurred losses of UAH 52.966 billion, with 52 Ukrainian banks out of 163 operating financial institutions ending the year with losses.
As UNIAN reported earlier, in the first half of 2014 Ukrainian companies incurred UAH 135.952 billion in losses, compared to UAH 8.724 billion in profit in the same period of 2013.
