PJSC Centrenergo has invested in the construction of Ukraine's first full-scale gas purification system at Power Unit 2 of Trypilska Thermal Power Station, according to Volodymyr Potapenko, the company's acting CEO.

"Centrenergo understands all the responsibility that we, as a business, bear before the residents of the region where we work. To improve the environmental situation in Kyiv region, a full-scale flue gas desulphurization installation was launched at the Trypilska TPP. This construction had been prepared for years, but it was our team, together with the TPP professionals, who managed to complete such an important project," said told reporters Wednesday.

The installation was developed using semi-dry flue gas desulphurization  technology with the participation of a European company RAFAKO SA.

"This cleaning method has already been successfully applied at power plants in Poland, which have a positive experience in the implementation and operation of desulphurization works. Also, the implementation of such plants meets the requirements of the Energy Community of which Ukraine is a member," said the CEO.

The project costs UAH 580 million. To date, more than UAH 501 million has already been invested. Of this sum, over UAH 193 million came from Centrenergo, and another UAH 308 million – from the energy regulator.

"Trypilska TPP is the first among the other plants where such desulphurization has been installed. For Ukraine, this is a pilot project. The construction of the desulphurization installation began in August 2013 as part of the reconstruction of Unit 2 and was carried out in several stages. One of the reasons for the delay in construction is the change of management at Centrenergo – some of them did not realize the importance of this project, but today these problems are left behind and we have a completed facility. Now Polish experts are training our staff. Desulphurization was launched two days ago, but we've already recorded a 50-fold reduction in emissions: a bag filter allows eliminating from air particles from 2500 mg to 50 mg. This fully complies with European standards," said the director of Trypilska TPP.

Centrenergo operates three TPPs: Vuhlehirska (Donetsk region), Zmiivska (Kharkiv region), and Trypilska (Kyiv region), with a total design capacity of 7,660 MW, which is about 14% of the total installed capacity in Ukraine.

As reported earlier, PJSC Centrenergo, in preparation for the heating season, entered into an agreement for the supply of more than 1 million tonnes of coal for September 2019.
