"Kazakhstan has a clear and consistent position to exclude the possibility of introducing a single and supranational currency within the Eurasian Economic Union. These issues are not discussed and are not on the agenda," Zhaksylykov said at a briefing in Astana.

"We only intend to perform by 2025 the harmonization of legislation in the field of financial markets regulation within the framework of the EEU activities," the vice-minister said.

"There is no mention of any monetary or currency union or its prospects," he added.

As earlier reported, in late March, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that the EEU countries should focus on establishing a monetary union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

On May 29, 2014, Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan signed in Astana an agreement on setting up the Eurasian Economic Union, which entered into force on January 1, 2015. On January 2, Armenia joined the EEU, and Kyrgyzstan’s accession to the union is expected in May.
