Ukraine boosts onion imports 26 times in MY 2018-2019

Ukraine boosted onion imports by 26 times in the 2018-2019 marketing year (MY, August 2018-July 2019) from the previous one, to 87,000 tonnes.

"In terms of imports, onions were for the first time in the lead, which shipments to [Ukraine] in the past season totaled 87,000 tonnes, which was 26 times up from the previous season," the East Fruit analytical platform's press service said on October 2.

Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers also became major staples of vegetable imports to Ukraine in monetary terms, the report said.

Over the period under review, the country imported 66,000 tonnes of tomatoes, 18,300 tonnes of commercial potatoes, 14,700 tonnes of cucumbers, 11,800 tonnes of peppers, 9,500 tonnes of different types of cabbage, and 7,500 tonnes of carrots.

Experts say Ukraine in MY 2018-2019 increased imports of almost all vegetables, including salad crops and greens.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the vegetables harvest in Ukraine in 2019 may shrink by 5.8% to 8.9 million tonnes, while that of fruits and berries may fall by 12.7% to 2.2 million tonnes, according to the National Scientific Center "Institute of Agrarian Economy."
