More than half of planned areas sown with winter grain in Ukraine

Ukrainian farmers by October 2, 2019, had sown 4.1 million hectares (ha) with winter grain, or 56% of the planned areas (7.3 million hectares), the Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry's press service has said.

According to the report, winter wheat was sown on 3.7 million ha, or 59% of the forecast; rye on 81,000 ha, or 67% of the plan; winter barley on 314,000 ha, or 34% of the plan.

In addition, winter rapeseed was sown on 1 million ha, or 94% of the forecast.

Harvesting grain in Ukraine continues simultaneously with the autumn sowing campaign, the ministry said.

As of October 2, farmers had threshed 47.6 million tonnes of grain from an area of 11.5 million ha, or 75% of the plan. In particular, 7.9 million tonnes of maize was threshed from 1.3 million ha (26%); 75,000 tonnes of buckwheat from 57,000 ha (84%); 142,000 tonnes of millet from 76,000 ha (84%). Ukrainian farmers threshed 10.9 million tonnes of sunflower seeds from 4.7 million ha (80%) and 2.3 million tonnes of soybeans from 998,000 ha (63%). The sugar beet yield was 2.4 million tonnes, harvested from 53,000 ha (24%).

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine in 2018 saw a record high yield of grain and leguminous crops, having harvested 70.1 million tonnes. According to the ministry's forecast, the crop may increase by 1.5% in 2019 from 2018, to 71.1 million tonnes.
