"The law provides for the improvement of the legal regulation in the field of intellectual property with regard to legal protection of geographical indications through the introduction of appropriate amendments to a number of laws and codes," the Ukrainian news outlet Hromadske wrote on October 9, referring to the president's website.

The adoption of the law on geographical indications will contribute to the fulfillment by Ukraine of its obligations under the Association Agreement and will adapt the Ukrainian legislation to the EU law.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, passed a draft law on geographical indications on September 20. A total of 277 lawmakers backed the document.

A geographical indication is the name of a product that is produced in a particular territory. For example, this refers to cognac, champagne, feta cheese, etc. Ukraine's food product with a protected geographical indication of origin may be "Hutsul Brynza" (brinsen cheese) and "Melitopol Cherries."
