Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Kryklii says the Cabinet of Ministers has returned the Ukrainian national railways company PJSC Ukrzaliznytsia under control of the Infrastructure Ministry.

"The return of the prodigal son… By government decision, Ukrzaliznytsia was returned to the management of the Infrastructure Ministry. Thanks to the prime minister for his support in overcoming the consequences of the previous government's strange coalition agreements," he wrote on Facebook on October 18.

The minister added that the reform of Ukrzaliznytsia, which was supposed to be launched three years ago, would finally be implemented.

"Ukrzaliznytsia is expected to be unbundled into an infrastructure operator, a freight carrier, and a passenger carrier, getting the status of a public company. A competitive rail market will be created with equitable access to rail infrastructure. To this end, we need a new law on rail transport, and we count on the support of Parliament in this regard. We are preparing a reform of the tariff system for rail transportation services," he added.

Kryklii also told about the plans to upgrade railway infrastructure and update the fleet of passenger cars and locomotives.

"We also plan to improve quality of passenger services, transfer stations to management on concession terms, and implement passenger transport quality management systems in line with European Union standards," he wrote.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in early 2017, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution to transfer Ukrzaliznytsia from the Infrastructure Ministry's management to that of the government.
