The State Customs Service plans to launch in early 2020 the first two scanners earlier procured to combat smuggling, said agency chief Maksym Nefyodov.

"It had been expected that seven complexes scanners would be purchased but only four were procured and set up, while none of them are now operable. Two of them can be put into operation quickly enough, and we are working on it," he told a briefing Monday.

Nefyodov noted that part of the scanners was installed in such a way to ensure that they are never launched.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in 2017, the State Fiscal Service announced a tender to procure scanners, which was blocked by the Anti-Monopoly Committee of Ukraine. In September last year, Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman threatened to sack the antimonopoly chief over the cancellation of the SFS tender. In October 2017, Groysman promised that the first batch of new scanners would appear at customs before the end of 2018.
