Azerbaijan's Bakcell allowed to acquire Vodafone Ukraine

The deal will allow the Azerbaijani company to indirectly control the Ukrainian mobile operator working under the Vodafone brand.

The Anti-Monopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU) has allowed Azerbaijan's mobile operator Bakcell to go ahead with a deal to acquire the Vodafone Ukraine mobile operator.

"Today, the Anti-Monopoly Committee of Ukraine has granted permission to Bakcell LLC (Baku, Azerbaijan) for the indirect acquisition of shares of Preludium B.V. (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) [the owner of the Vodafone brand] with over 50% of the votes in the company's supreme governing body," the AMCU's press service said on October 24.

The deal will allow the Azerbaijani company to indirectly control the Ukrainian mobile operator working under the Vodafone brand.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine's Anti-Monopoly Committee earlier confirmed that Azerbaijan's Bakcell might purchase Vodafone Ukraine. As a result, Bakcell may gain control over the management of PJSC VF Ukraine, one of the leading Ukrainian mobile operators working under the Vodafone brand.

UNIAN memo. Vodafone Ukraine is one of the major domestic mobile operators. The company provides services in GSM and CDMA-450 standards to more than 20 million subscribers.

Azerbaijani-based Bakcell, which operates in GSM, UMTS and LTE standards, was founded in 1994. It became the first company providing mobile services in the country. Bakcell network covers more than 95% of the population and about 88% of the territory in Azerbaijan.

Bakcell has roaming agreements with 211 operators in 120 countries.
