Ukraine's Cabinet sets rules for organic production

Ukraine's Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture Ministry says the Cabinet of Ministers has established comprehensive rules for economic activities in the organic production sector.

"On October 23, the Cabinet of Ministers established detailed rules for economic activities with regard to organic production in Ukraine. The relevant resolution will contribute to the formation of an effective state policy in the field of organic production in Ukraine," the ministry's press service said on October 24.

The resolution sets the rules for organic crop production, livestock, including specific requirements for organic poultry farming and beekeeping, as well as organic mushroom farming and aquaculture, the production of organic seaweed, foodstuffs and feed, and the harvesting of organic greenery. In addition, the scope of exceptions, parallel and simultaneous production, storage, transportation and labeling of certain types of organic products were envisaged in the document.

The purpose of the resolution is to ensure the proper and efficient functioning of the market for organic products, as well as the creation of transparent conditions for conducting business in the production and turnover of organic products, the press service said.

According to the agency, the new rules will reduce the pollution of air, water and land by agrochemicals, pesticides and animal waste, as well as create high-quality conditions for keeping some types of animals.

As UNIAN reported earlier, a law on basic principles and requirements for organic production came into force in Ukraine on August 2.
