Ukraine reports record high exports of grain, 44% up y-o-y

Almost 40 million tonnes of grain was sold abroad.

Ukraine has reported record high exports of grain this year, having sold 39.8 million tonnes of wheat, maize and other types of crops.

This was 44% year-over-year (y-o-y), the press center of the National Scientific Center "Institute of Agrarian Economy" has said, citing its deputy director Mykola Pugachov.

The grain exports in monetary terms grew by 42.5%, to US$6.8 billion.

"In the nine months of 2019, some 13.7 million tonnes of wheat worth US$2.5 billion was sold abroad along with 22.6 million tonnes of maize worth US$3.7 billion and 3.3 million tonnes of barley worth US$600 million," it said.

Countries in Africa, Asia and Europe remained the largest buyers of Ukrainian grain in January-September 2019. In particular, Egypt was in the lead in the ranking of the largest importers of Ukrainian grain; its share in total exports in January-September 2019 was 14.1% (in monetary terms). "Compared to the same period in 2018, that country's spending on grain purchases grew by 75%, US$966 million," it said.

The following countries also had significant shares: China (9.6%), Spain (7.5%), Turkey (7.4%), the Netherlands (6.8%), Indonesia (5.1%), Bangladesh (3.9%), Israel (3.4%), Tunisia and Italy (3.1% each).

As UNIAN reported, the grain harvest in Ukraine is expected to reach a record 80 million tonnes this year thanks to investment in upgrading farming equipment and technologies.

In the 2018-2019 marketing year (July 2018 – June 2019), farmers exported 49.7 million tonnes of grain, which is a record over Ukraine's independence.
