Ukraine has cut foreign currency spending on imported coal this year.

In particular, Ukraine reduced foreign exchange spending on imports of anthracite and other types of coal by 4% in January-October 2019, year-over-year, to US$2.364 billion, the country's State Fiscal Service said.

In particular, the country bought 17.325 million tonnes of coal abroad over the period under review.

The largest suppliers were Russia, the United States, and Kazakhstan. Coal imports from Russia in monetary terms in the ten months of 2019 amounted to US$1.38 billion (58.4%), those from the United States to US$772.6 million (30.7%). In Kazakhstan, Ukraine bought coal worth US$107 million (4.5%). Coal imports from other countries were estimated at US$148 million.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine started facing an acute shortage of coal since the summer of 2014 as a result of hostilities in the east of the country. It completely lost control over some areas in Donbas where most of coal mines are located. After that, the country started importing coal.

In April, the Russian government restricted imports of fuel and other energy products into Ukraine. As of June 1, 2019, coal, crude oil and fuel can be shipped to Ukraine only if there are individually issued permits.
