The Accounting Chamber of Ukraine says illegal and ineffective management decisions by senior officials from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) led to the wasteful use of UAH 16.5 million (US$682,100) in administrative expenses in 2018.

In particular, UAH 3.6 million, or US$148,822, in wages was paid to 35 NBU employees last year due to untimely warning them of dismissals, the Accounting Chamber said on November 21.

In addition, the Chamber noted the inefficient use of UAH 3 million (US$124,018) as courts reinstated unlawfully laid-off workers in their posts. What is more, UAH 9.9 million (US$409,260) was wasted on the maintenance of the facilities the NBU did not use.

The Accounting Chamber also said that part of the NBU's profit due to be transferred to the national budget in 2019 exceeded the planned figure in connection with the retroactive application of changes in accounting policies rather than thanks to the regulator's good performance.

The NBU, in turn, disagrees with the Accounting Chamber's findings. "Following the audit, the National Bank considers that the Accounting Chamber has not found any significant drawback, while certain critical remarks concern solely internal processes," the NBU said on its website.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the National Bank in 2019 transferred part of its profit for 2018 in the amount of UAH 64.9 billion, or US$2.68 billion, to the budget in two tranches - in April and May. The state budget of Ukraine for 2020 provides that the National Bank should transfer at least UAH 40.7 billion , or US$1.68 billion, from profit for 2019 to the Treasury.
