The national customs agency chief believes the arson may have been plotted by either smugglers or corrupt officers defying the ongoing cleansing.

A car belonging to an acting head of the Odesa customs office, Ihor Reznik, was burned down overnight Tuesday.

"At night, a Skoda Octavia car was burned down at a customs guarded parking lot. The car belonged to the family of Ihor Reznik, acting head of the Odesa customs. CCTV footage shows someone hopping the fence, throwing a bottle and running off. Who could benefit from this? A lot of options here – from smugglers to even certain customs officers for whom we've been a nuisance with our anti-smuggling work," head of the State Customs Service Maksym Nefyodov wrote on Facebook, posting the video that shows the moment arson was committed.

According to the customs chief, a container with Apple and Sony products worth $300,000 were seized in Odesa yesterday, as well as fines were imposed worth UAH 5.7 million (US$237,203) with respect to four imported BMWs.

"I appeal publicly to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the SBU Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police of Ukraine to ensure a prompt and transparent investigation. The fight against smuggling is an actual war, and we must win," Nefyodov added.
