Ukraine starts testing mobile app with digital driver's license

However, plastic IDs for drivers remain the main, basic document.

Deputy chief of the main service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Yuriy Smolianinov says Ukraine on December 19 will start testing a mobile app with digital driver's licenses and car registrations drivers can use as a substitute for plastic or paper licenses they normally carry.

"A driver's license in the form of a plastic card, as it was, remains the main document. In your smartphone, you will see a digital display of the driver's license that was issued to you," he told the Ukrainian online news outlet Obozrevatel on December 12.

According to Smolianinov, the relevant service centers will provide access to the Unified State Register of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the "Action" app, which is being developed by Ukraine's Digital Transformation Ministry.

"If you receive a driver's license at a service center, you launch the application and get its digital imprint on your smartphone. As far as I know, such an imprint can only be stored in a single device, the one that is registered on you. So, you can carry with you a smartphone with your driver's license and registration in it rather than plastic or paper documents," he added.

The Digital Transformation Ministry has already selected a group of persons to test the app. The app for a group of testers will be presented on Monday, December 16. If testing shows positive results, the app will be launched across Ukraine.

At the same time, Smolianinov could not name specific dates of the project implementation.
