"It will help diversify natural gas flows and reduce dependence on Russian energy resources," he said, as reported by the Ukrainian media outlet European Pravda on December 14, referring to Kuleba's press service.

According to the official, this refers to a strategic balance in the entire region, in particular, Russia's influence in Central Europe and the Western Balkans.

The bill envisaged the allocation of US$1 billion to the countries of Eastern and Central Europe for the construction of energy infrastructure by U.S.-based companies.

Kuleba has already advocated the adoption of the bill at meetings with U.S. congressmen. The document is expected to be considered soon.

As UNIAN reported earlier, NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and Russia's Gazprom agreed at bilateral talks in Vienna that they would continue looking for options to prolong gas transit via Ukrainian territory after December 31, 2019.
