The price of natural gas in Ukraine will be known after talks with Russia's Gazprom on a new contract on transit supplies via Ukrainian territory to Europe are over.
"This is really a factor that has a great impact on the price of gas. Therefore, we will know the price of gas in January and February this winter when it becomes clear whether this contact is viable. It really depends on this," Ukrainian Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk said on ICTV on Monday evening.
The price of gas for Ukrainians will grow if no gas transit deal has been struck, but it will stay within the limits earlier announced by NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, he said.

"But in fact, it is about the guaranteed price that Ukrainians will get. Thus, the market is safeguarded against growing prices. That is, conditionally, if we imagine that there is no transit of Russian gas and market prices soar by 50%, the price for Ukrainians will not actually increase. It will stay at the same level that was announced by Naftogaz today [on December 16]," he added.
According to UNIAN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, following a Normandy summit in Paris on December 9, announced there is a chance to sign a new transit agreement with the Russian Federation on better terms than before.
The current transit contract between Ukraine and Russia's Gazprom was concluded in 2009 for a period of 10 years. After it expires from 2020, the Russian monopolist intends to minimize gas transit through Ukraine.
