Orzhel: New gas transit deal with Russia designed for five years with possible extension for 10 years

The minimum guaranteed amount of gas transit shipments in 2020 is set at 65 bcm.

A new deal with the Russian Federation for gas transit via Ukraine to Europe is designed for five years with a possible extension for another 10 years.

"The contract will be concluded for a period of five years with a possible extension for ten years on the same conditions," Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection Oleksiy Orzhel said at a briefing in Kyiv on Saturday, December 21.

According to him, the new contract provides for guaranteed minimum transit volumes set at 65 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2020 and at 40 bcm in 2021–2024 each.

As was reported, late on December 20, representatives of the European Commission, Ukraine and the Russian Federation reached a final agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to European consumers and the settlement of mutual claims.

Later, CEO of LLC Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (TSO of Ukraine/GTSOU) Serhiy Makogon said that the Ukrainian operator would continue bilateral gas transit talks with Russia's Gazprom on December 21.
