MSB-6 Ataman helicopter project still at initial stage – Ukraine defense official

The helicopter could be used in recon and surveillance missions, fire support of ground troops, and anti-tank efforts.

The MSB-6 Ataman helicopter project, worked out by defense companies that are part of the Ukroboronprom Concern, is still at the initial stage, says Major General Ihor Yaremenko.

In an interview with the Krylia publication, the defense official noted that "stable financial support" is required to pursue with further work on the project, initially announced back in 2015.

The MSB-6 Ataman is designed based on the Polish W-3 Sokol and aimed at partially replacing the Soviet-era multi-purpose Mi-8.

The new helicopter will receive a new engine and on-board systems.

Among the main tasks of the helicopter is passenger and goods transportation; participation in anti-terrorist operations, etc.

With weapons and special equipment installed, the helicopter could be used in recon and surveillance missions, fire support of ground troops, and anti-tank efforts.
