Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP's unit No. 3 de-energized by protection system – Energoatom

The cause of the protection system activation is being clarified.

Ukraine's national nuclear energy generating company Energoatom says unit No. 3 at Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear power plant (NPP) located near the town of Yuzhnoukrainsk in Mykolaiv region was disconnected from the grid after automatic protection system was triggered on Saturday, January 4.

"Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear power plant's unit No. 3 was disconnected from the grid by the automated protection system at 05:04 [Kyiv time] on January 4, 2020," Energoatom's press service said in a statement on Saturday.

"The cause of the protection system activation is being clarified," the press service added.

Two power units of Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP are operating now, the report said.

UNIAN memo. Energoatom is Ukraine's largest electricity producer, accounting for about 50% of the country's overall power output. Energoatom is responsible for the safe operation of the country's nuclear power plants.

Ukraine ranks seventh globally in terms of the installed capacity of its nuclear power generating units. Energoatom operates four nuclear power plants across Ukraine with a total of 15 power generating units, all with VVER-type reactors. Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, operating six power units with a total capacity of 6 GW, is Europe's largest.
