The European Union has lifted the ban on imports of Ukrainian poultry, which was introduced on January 23 over a bird flu outbreak in Ukraine's Vinnitsa region.

This is reported in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Representative of Ukraine to the European Union Mykola Tochytskyi said on Facebook on March 4 that the EU had also applied the zoning regime to Ukraine for the first time, that is, it recognized the boundaries of the outbreak of bird flu in a certain area rather than in the country's entire territory.

"Today we've secured two victories in the agricultural, sanitary and phytosanitary sectors. Firstly, following the consolidated work with the European Commission, a decision was issued today to lift the EU ban on imports and transit shipments of poultry products from Ukraine to the EU. Secondly, the EU first applied the zoning regime to Ukraine in the context of an outbreak of bird flu," he wrote.

Ukraine plans to introduce an early warning mechanism in the agricultural sector, which will contribute to the timely prevention and appropriate control of diseases of animals and plants, he said. It is also designed to prevent their possible negative impact on trade relations with the EU.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the first case of bird flu in Ukraine since 2017 was recorded at the Khutir agricultural enterprise in Vinnitsa region on January 20, 2020. As a result, over 100,000 birds were eliminated.

On January 23, the European Union temporarily suspended imports of Ukrainian poultry and products made of it over the bird flu outbreak. A similar ban was introduced by more than 10 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Moldova, and others.
