The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has imposed a special duty at 65% on imports of electricity and coal, except anthracite and coking coal, from Russia.

"It is proposed to introduce a special duty for electricity and all types of coal, except for anthracite and coking coal for the energy and steelmaking industries, at a rate of 65% from April 1, 2020," Ukrainian Minister for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture Ihor Petrashko said before the relevant resolution was adopted at a government meeting on March 18.

In early March, the then Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection Oleksiy Orzhel told UNIAN that special duties would be imposed on imports of gas grade coal and electricity from Russia.

On February 25, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tasked Orzhel to restrict imports into our country of electricity and coal, only allowing imports of grades that are not produced in Ukraine.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine started facing an acute shortage of coal since the summer of 2014 as a result of hostilities in the east of the country. It completely lost control over some areas in Donbas where most of coal mines are located. After that, the country started importing coal.
