Chief sanitary official of Ukraine Viktor Liashko has addressed the issue of shortage of disinfectants, antiseptics in particular, seen across the country.

The reasons he named, speaking at the Pravo na Vladu [Right to Power] TV panel show are a "bureaucratic barrier" and the low stocks of raw material for their manufacture.

"There really is a certain problem with antiseptics. We met with the largest manufacturers of antiseptics to talk about why there's a lack of them on the market. The first question was about the registration of disinfectants. There was one bureaucratic barrier that we will overcome in the near future," explained Viktor Liashko.

Because of this so-called barrier, Liashko says, manufacturers of disinfectants were taxed. However, the deputy minister of health assured, this problem will be resolved by next Wednesday.

"Another [reason] is with the availability of raw material. Since there's a global issue with propyl alcohol, which is usually used to produce antiseptic agents, unfortunately. You can't get it anywhere. At the same time, Ukraine is one of the leaders among ethanol manufacturers. Ethanol is also used as antiseptics," Liashko said.

The state-owned Ukrspyrt distillery launched another four factories due to the increased demand for medical spirit in connection with the spread of coronavirus.

The company is increasing output to meet the needs of the healthcare system. Also, Ukrspyrt suspended the export of alcohol due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company said that exports would be resumed after the domestic market was fully provided with alcohol.
