Ukraine's budget can provide at least US$179.8 mln to fight against coronavirus – Accounts Chamber

The state budget of Ukraine has at least UAH 5 billion (US$179.8 million) that can be redirected to support health care authorities in tackling coronavirus.

According to the Accounts Chamber with reference to an operational analysis of the state budget for 2020, the state budget has a reserve fund for such cases, from which UAH 1.4 billion (US$50.3 million) are not allocated today, and it is also possible to use stabilization subsidies for local budgets in the amount of UAH 200 million (US$7.2 million) and funds worth UAH 300 million (US$10.7 million) provided for the Bureau of Financial Investigations that has not yet been founded.

There are also funds for statistical research in the amount of UAH 1.2 billion (US$43.1 million) and savings for the payment of certain types of benefits to the population worth UAH 1.1 billion (US$39.5 million).

In addition, there is a number of budget programs, whose costs could be reduced in favor of health care. These are funds for a comprehensive reform of public administration worth UAH 600 million (US$21.5 million), public debt management worth UAH 11 million (US$395,683), the functioning of trade missions abroad worth UAH 25.6 million (US$920,863), support for the development of leadership in Ukraine worth UAH 13.5 million (US$485,611).

The Accounts Chamber also believes today every MP should take a responsible stance and support redirection of subventions on socio-economic development to the priority needs of the regions, in particular, the acquisition of medical equipment.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine creates a stabilization fund to deal with the effects of coronavirus infection.

In addition, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky late Monday reported on the agreements reached with the country's top businessmen he convened at his office in Kyiv earlier that day. In particular, a separate fund worth UAH 12-13 billion (nearly $450 million) will be set up to support the country's health care sector in the fight against the coronavirus.
