Ukrainian farmers export almost 44 mln tonnes of grain since July 1

Ukrainian agribusinesses continue shipments of grain abroad amid quarantine over COVID-19 having exported 43.62 million tonnes of grain from July 1, 2019, the start of the 2019-2020 marketing year (MY), to March 20, 2020, which was 8.6 million tonnes up from the relevant period of MY 2018-2019.

In particular, Ukraine exported 17.29 million tonnes of wheat, 4.1 million tonnes of barley, 21.71 million tonnes of maize, and 5,000 tonnes of rye, the Ukrainian Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture Ministry's press service said.

Over the period under review, agrarians also shipped 265,500 tonnes of flour from wheat and other types of grain to foreign customers, which was 75,800 tonnes up against the relevant period of MY 2018-2019.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian farmers in 2019 harvested 75 million tonnes of grain, of which 54 million tonnes will be supplied onto foreign markets, according to the ministry.

The Cabinet of Ministers on March 11 decided to introduce quarantine across Ukraine from March 12 to April 3.

On March 16, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the government to ban exports of certain food products. The Cabinet of Ministers is yet to draw a list of such goods.

Exporters of farm produce called for prevention of grain and oilseeds exports from halt due to the closure of most border checkpoints amid the coronavirus pandemic.
