The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) on Friday evening strengthened the official hryvnia exchange rate by six kopiykas for Monday, March 23, bringing the national currency to UAH 27.74 to the U.S. dollar.

The hryvnia became stronger after it had been losing in value against U.S. dollar for two weeks in a row, according to the NBU website.

The official forex rate against the euro for Monday is fixed at UAH 29.64 per euro – the hryvnia gained 45 kopiykas in value since Friday.

Quotations of the hryvnia against the U.S. dollar on the interbank currency market as of 15:00 on March 20 grew to UAH 27.43/27.53, while against the euro – to UAH 29.37/29.48.

The U.S. dollar remained against the hryvnia at UAH 28.50 in Kyiv's currency exchange booths on Friday, while euro dropped to UAH 30.70.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the increased demand for foreign currency, which has been observed in Ukraine for the second week in a row, is caused by the deterioration of market sentiment due to the global spread of coronavirus.

The NBU said it would impose no restrictions on Ukraine's forex market and would continue to mitigate excessive fluctuations through the sales of currency from reserves.

Last week, the regulator spent US$981.6 million to support the hryvnia. Some US$938 million was spent over four days this week.

Today, Ukraine's international reserves exceed US$24 billion, the regulator said.

The central bank in 2019 bought US$7.9 billion on the interbank forex market to replenish the country's international reserves.
