UN to allocate US$33 mln for Ukraine's war on coronavirus

This refers to the implementation of humanitarian projects on both sides of the contact line in Donbas, eastern Ukraine.

Spokesperson for the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations Oleh Nikolenko says the UN will allocate US$33 million for Ukraine as part of a global plan to combat the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

"The global humanitarian response plan to fight COVID-19, announced today by the UN Secretary General, provides for assistance to Ukraine. The aid will total US$33 million," he wrote on Facebook on March 25.

This refers to the implementation of humanitarian projects in eastern Ukraine on both sides of the contact line in the following sectors: health care institutions, food security and essential goods, assistance to the elderly and people with disabilities, and remote schooling.

"The most vulnerable categories of Ukrainians should have means for treatment and minimization of the negative impact of the coronavirus," he added.

Nikolenko noted that, the UN Secretary General plans to raise US$2 billion to curb the spread of COVID-19 in South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. In particular, the move will ensure the delivery of required laboratory equipment and medicines, the installation of additional hygiene stations, awareness campaigns on personal protection from the virus.

Air bridges and regional hubs will also be arranged in Africa, Asia and Latin America for humanitarian workers and the delivery of goods.
