PM on quarantine measures: Ukraine can't stay idle for six months

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal argues that the government is considering options for weakening restrictive measures set up to flatten the curve of coronavirus spread to restart the economy.

At the same time, he admitted on the air of a panel show on ICTV, this will depend on the dynamics of the spread.

"We're very well aware that many people, the majority of the Ukrainian population have no financial cushion, and there is no way for them to just stay at home for three months. People need to earn. Economy needs to be restarted. Also, Ukraine is not that rich of a country that could afford to stay idle for six months and watch TV on the couch," the prime minister said.

Shmyhal has once again emphasized that supporting citizens left without money was one of the primary tasks for his government.

At the same time, after the Easter holidays, given the dynamics of the spread of the disease, a question will be raised on further economic steps the Cabinet should take.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on March 25, the Cabinet of Ministers extended quarantine until April 24, and introduced an emergency situation regime throughout the country.

Under strict quarantine, 57% of Ukrainians will run out of money in four weeks or less, 6.9% have savings for several days, and 6.3% – for six months or more.
