Ukraine posts $1.8 bln in balance-of-payments deficit in five months

Ukraine's balance of payments in January-May 2015 had a deficit of $1.789 billion, almost half of the deficit registered in the same period last year at $3.496 billion, according to rough estimates published on the website of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

In May alone, the balance of payments demonstrated a surplus of $320 million, but this figure was three times lower than a year-over-year surplus of $1.013 billion, the NBU said.

The current account deficit of the balance of payments in January-May shrank by 5.6 times year-over-year, to $345 million, including $10 million in the May deficit.

The capital account of balance of payments in the five months had a surplus of $248 million, which is 20.7 times higher than the year-over-year surplus. The account balance in May was zero.

The financial account of the balance of payments in January-May had a surplus of $1.692 billion, 8.1%, or $126 million, up against the same period last year. The deficit in May alone was estimated at $330 million.

The net outflow of foreign direct investment in January-May amounted to $774 million, including $363 million in May, the regulator said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine's balance of payments in January-April 2015 had a deficit of $2.106 billion, which was 2.1 times less than a deficit of $4.509 billion in January-April 2014.

In 2014, Ukraine saw a balance-of-payments deficit of $13.307 billion against a surplus of $2.023 billion in 2013.
