Over 40% of Ukrainians note increase in spending amid quarantine – poll

The outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic has forced many Ukrainians to postpone many purchases.

Over 40% of Ukrainians have noted an increase in spending during quarantine restrictions imposed across the country.

Some 27.7% of respondents noted a slight increase in their expenses, while 13.5% declared a significant increase in expenses. At the same time, expenses slightly decreased among 26% of respondents, while significantly decreased among 16.1%. A total of 16.7% of respondents said their expenses did not change, as evidenced by a survey conducted by the Postmen digital agency among Facebook users.

As for savings, almost a third of respondents (30.4%) said they had none, 29.7% said their savings would cover only month, 16.5% said they would have money for six months, 5.2% said their stocks would last up to 12 months, while4.2% have savings for three or more years.

Over the past 30 days, 80.3% of respondents bought more food than usual, 37.2% began to buy more medications, and 17.5% say they have been buying more beauty and hygiene products. Also, the list of frequent purchases included alcohol (11.3%), pet products (9.5%) and gardening goods (7.3%). In addition, some respondents noted they had recently bought more foreign currency, sanitizer, and purchased access to online webinars.

Despite quarantine measures, most Ukrainians (63%) still prefer to make purchases offline. Some 17.6% of respondents prefer online shopping, while 19.1% are undecided.

The outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic has forced many Ukrainians to postpone many purchases. Clothing and shoes are the leaders in this list – their purchase was postponed by 47.2% of respondents. Traveling is in second place: 40.9% reported delayed leave. In addition, 33.3% of respondents postponed the purchase of tickets for any events, while 28.1% postponed repair and purchase of plumbing. The list of pending purchases includes gadgets, home appliances, furniture, cars and luxury goods (designer clothes and jewelry).

The epidemic and quarantine had an inevitable impact on the labor market. Almost half of Ukrainians surveyed (47.8%) said they began to work less, 19.9% began to work more, and there were no changes in work for 32.2% of respondents. At the same time, 42% of respondents aged from 18 to 25 years old began to work more, while there were only 16% of those polled aged from 45 to 55 years old.

The survey was conducted on April 9 on Facebook. The number of respondents amounted to 802 people.
