Unemployment in Ukraine soars by 27%

Ukraine's Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture says the number of the unemployed in Ukraine soared by 27% as of April 16, 2020, against the figure as of April 16, 2019, to 400,900 people.

"As of April 16, 2020, the number of unemployed registered with the State Employment Service is 400.900, which is by 86,500, or 27%, up year-on-year (314,400 as of April 16, 2019)," the ministry's press service said on April 16.

In particular, 89,200 unemployed citizens had been registered with the Service since March 12, the start of the quarantine set in Ukraine over the coronavirus spread.

At the same time, the number of vacancies as of April 1 was 54,000. This is almost 30% fewer than last year, the report said.

Today, there is a demand for agriculture and forestry workers, which is associated with the start of spring agricultural works, as well as for those engaged in trade and services, as such activities are not prohibited amid quarantine: sellers, cashiers, cooks, etc.

There is also a demand for specialists in logistics (couriers and drivers), healthcare and social services (nurses and social workers), and security (security guards and watchmen).

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on April 15 said the number of unemployed officially registered in the country soared almost tenfold from the figure posted before the introduction of quarantine.

The Cabinet of Ministers on March 11 decided to introduce quarantine in Ukraine from March 12 until April 3 over the spread of the novel COVID-19 coronavirus. On March 25, the national quarantine was extended, while the national emergency situation was introduced throughout the country until April 24.

Catering establishments (restaurants and cafes), shopping and entertainment centers, other entertainment facilities, fitness centers, and cultural institutions temporarily suspended their operation for the quarantine period, while pharmacies, grocery stores, household goods stores, as well as restaurants (only in delivery mode) were allowed to provide their services.
